Google Doodle celebrates the 101st anniversary of the first Traffic lights

Today's Google Doodle celebrates the first ever set of traffic lights installed in Cleveland, Ohio on August 5th, 1914. The animated doodle shows cars with the letters spelling 'Google' halting at a red traffic light and then rushing past it as it turns green.

The first traffic lights were installed by the American Traffic Signal Company on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio on 5 August 1914. Before the first  traffic lights were installed police officers used to work the lights by hand. In 1920 Wire's traffic light system was modified and bells were added to alert motorists when the lights were about to change. Later, the bells were replaced with the yellow light and it continues to be used on traffic light systems even today.
